Sunday concerts of uplifting music that will make your heart sing!
Since 1964, the Rochester Chamber Orchestra has become known for its valuable cultural and educational service to the Rochester community, offering the outstanding repertory of chamber orchestra music from the 17th century to the present, with special emphasis on reaching families and students. The RCO was established with encouragement and assistance of the major faculty at the Eastman School of Music, including director Dr. Howard Hanson, and the principal players of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. David Fetler, then on the Eastman School faculty, who also served as assistant conductor to Leopold Stokowski and the American Symphony Orchestra in New York, became the Music Director and Conductor.
Of prime importance to the RCO is providing opportunities to the creative musical talent in the Rochester area, to composers and professional musicians. The RCO has encouraged new works and commissions, presented numerous premieres. Among those premieres have been works by such composers as David Diamond, John LaMontaine (for Rochester's Sesquicentennial Celebration), Wayne Barlow, Timothy Sullivan, Kenneth Richmond, William Cahn of the Nexus Ensemble, David Evan Thomas and Alvin Parris.
Music director and conductor Dr. David Fetler, known for his highly imaginative concert programs, served as Assistant Conductor to Leopold Stokowski and the American Symphony Orchestra in New York. A native of Riga, Latvia, David Fetler came to the United States at the age of twelve. He studied at the Julliard School of Music, Westminster Choir College, Eastman School of Music and with Pierre Monteux. For eight years he was the director of the Eastman Collegium Chamber Orchestra and Singers, and he currently directs both the Saint Paul Episcopal Choir in Rochester, New York and the Greece Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Fetler's interest in a wide variety of musical styles is evident in his innovative programming. He brings brilliant instrumentalists and gifted vocalists together with music from many nations, styles and periods. Each concert is a delight in its contrasts and its high level of artistic presentation. Dr. Fetler and this talented orchestra, comprised of Rochester's finest instrumentalists, have fans of every age and musical interest.
